The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments’ (COG) Commuter Connections program celebrated five local employers and organizations for their outstanding commuter benefits and telework programs at its 28th Annual Employer Awards ceremony held at the National Press Club on June 25th. City of Alexandria Councilmember Canek Aguirre and Montgomery County Councilmember Marilyn Balcombe of the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board presented the awards trophies to the winners.

2025 Award Ceremony picCommuter Connections recognized the City of Alexandria, Virginia, the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) of Alexandria, Virginia, and Washington Headquarters Services (WHS) of Arlington County, Virginia, with awards for their outstanding commuter benefits and resources that facilitate teleworking and promote various commuting methods, other than driving alone.

COG’s regional commuter program also honored Fairfax County Commuter Services with the 2025 Employer Outreach Team Award and Federal Realty – Pike & Rose in North Bethesda, Maryland, with the 2025 Employer Services Organization Award.

“By making alternative transportation easier, these organizations are improving how our region moves,” said James Walkinshaw, Chair of the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board at COG, and Fairfax County Supervisor. “Empowering employees to choose different transit options paves the way for cleaner air, less road congestion, and better mobility.”

Commuter Connections received nominations from employers throughout the region, focusing on improving work culture2025 Employer Awards Pic and community through innovative commuter benefits and/or telework programs. A selection committee evaluated these nominations and chose winners based on their efforts and accomplishments to reduce gasoline consumption and greenhouse gas emissions through fewer vehicle trips and miles traveled—while also creating measurable and sustainable commuter benefits for their employees.

“We’re pleased to honor the winners of our 2025 Employer Awards for their leadership in advancing sustainable commuting options,” said Daniel Sheehan, Commuter Connections Director. “These organizations demonstrate how alternative commuting options can benefit both the workforce and the environment, and we hope their efforts inspire others in the region.”

Employer Awards

Awardees for 2025 include the following three organizations:

The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), an individual membership professional organization,APTA earned a 2025 Employer Award for its numerous transit benefits and amenities. APTA subsidizes public transit and gives new employees a free $50 SmarTrip card through SmartBenefits. Awarded a Silver Bicycle Friendly Business designation from The League of American Bicyclists, APTA provides bike racks, lockers, showers, and a bike repair station for employees. The organization also encourages carpooling by designating preferred parking spaces. Furthermore, nearly all employees work from home at least two days per week. In 2024, these benefits helped employees reduce 787,500 Single-Occupant Vehicle (SOV) SOV miles traveled and save 35,795 gallons of gas.

AlexandriaThe City of Alexandria, Virginia, is committed to providing a range of flexible commuting options for its employees. The City’s Transportation Demand Management Program, GO Alex, focuses on reducing single occupant vehicle (SOV) travel. Through SmartBenefits, the City subsidizes employees who use public transit and qualified vanpool services. For those on bike or foot, shower facilities, lockers, and covered bike racks are available at most worksites. Employees can obtain annual Capital Bikeshare memberships for free. To shorten commutes, eligible employees living outside the city are offered an interest-free, deferred payment loan of up to $15,000 to help purchase a home within the City. Additionally, nearly a third of employees can telework up to two days per week. In 2024, the City of Alexandria helped reduce 4,974,000 SOV employee miles traveled and saved 226,091 gallons of gas.

Washington Headquarters Services (WHS), a Department of Defense (DoD) Field Activity supporting various DoD components—including the Pentagon and Mark Center—touts impressive coordination and outreach for its commuter program. Since the Pentagon Transit Center is the largest transit hub in the region, WHS established a Transportation Management Program Office to manage the DoD shuttle system, encourage non-SOV travel, and mitigate traffic impacts from large-scale construction projects. A member of Commuter Connections, WHS offers transit subsidies, alternative work schedules, compressed work weeks, and bike amenities. And finally, WHS’ extensive outreach includes fairs and events, advisories, traffic alerts, rideshare distribution lists, social media, and a monthly newsletter. In 2024, these efforts helped WHS reduce 131,480,000 SOV employee miles and save 5,976,364 gallons of gas.

These three employers combined saved 137,241,500 SOV miles travelled and 6,238,250 gallons of gas throughout 2024.

Employer Services Organization Award

Pike & Rose, Federal RealtyFederal Realty received the 2025 Employer Services Organization Award for enhancing commuting options at Pike & Rose, a property in Montgomery County that boasts offices, restaurants, apartments, retail shops, and more. Through the Montgomery County Department of Transportation’s FareShare program, Federal Realty offers a monthly transit subsidy for Pike & Rose retail employees, as well as bike racks, lockers, and showers. Federal Realty worked with the State Highway Administration and Montgomery County to help redesign Towne Road for safe bicycle/pedestrian access. Federal Realty also actively promotes SOV alternatives by hosting “Commuter Information Days” and strives to make transportation information accessible.

Employer Outreach Team AwardFairfax

Fairfax County Commuter Services was honored with the 2025 Employer Outreach Team Award for its success in partnering with employers to develop and expand commuter benefit offerings. During 2024, the team held 418 meetings, resulting in an impressive 404 new employer programs within the jurisdiction. County staff also organized numerous transportation events at employer worksites to increase employee participation.

Miles Ahead – Commuting Turns Competitive https://www.commuterconnections.org/enewsletter/log-those-sustainable-trips-commuting-turns-competitive/ Fri, 06 Jun 2025 19:56:52 +0000 https://www.commuterconnections.org/?p=1456 The goDMV Commuter Competition wrapped up its inaugural challenge. The three-month long contest was the first such regional competition; a friendly challenge for District, Maryland, and Virginia employers to promote sustainable commuting to their employees.

During the competition, commuters logged their trips for a chance to win prizes and other incentives as they climbed the leaderboard. The competition was free to take part in for both employers and employees.

A total of 41 employers took part in the competition, with the top winners being The World Bank, American Public Transportation Association, and Loudoun County Government, each winning a catered recognition luncheon.

More than 1,200 individuals participated in the competition logging 36,000 trips using sustainable travel methods and reducing 425,000 single occupant vehicle miles.

The grand prize for individual participants was a choice between a staycation at the Pendry Hotel or $500 in CommuterCash points. The points are redeemable for cash rewards through PayPal, Venmo, or Visa Card, and can also be exchanged for credit towards SmartTrip, Capital Bikeshare, or Virginia E-ZPass.

Various raffle winners received prizes including Washington Nationals Diamond Club tickets, a $100 restaurant gift certificate to ANJU, $120 RideDoc bike tune-ups, and a $250 Pacers Running gift card.

Other participants who finished in the top 20 on the individual leaderboard won $100 in CommuterCash points and over 300 participants qualified for monthly bonuses earning them $25 in rewards points. The first 50 participants who entered the competition received $50 to Pizza Paradiso.

All 41 employers in the competition played a vital role to encourage employees to participate and find more rewarding ways to commute to work instead of driving alone. The goDMV Commuter Competition will be back again and the CommuterCash app is available to your employees all year-round, providing rewards for every commute trip taken using sustainable travel methods.

The goDMV Commuter Competition team would like to thank all the employers and individual participants that took part in the first of its kind competition in the DMV. Everyone who participated won something!

To promote the goDMV Commuter Competition, Commuter Connections partnered with the District (goDCgo), Maryland, and Virginia Departments of Transportation, along with local jurisdictions.

Metrobus to Change Schedules and Route Names – Coming June 29th https://www.commuterconnections.org/enewsletter/metrobus-to-change-schedules-and-all-route-names-coming-june-29th/ Thu, 05 Jun 2025 22:04:24 +0000 https://www.commuterconnections.org/?p=1451 Are your employees aware of changes to Metrobus affecting service across the entire region? Metro is launching the Better Bus initiative, its first major overhaul to the system’s routes in 50 years.

All bus routes will be renamed, beginning with a letter to indicate the area served. For example, buses servicing DC will begin with a D or C, whereas Metrobuses in Montgomery County will start with the letter M. Many routes will have improved frequencies, and some will run at different times or serve new areas. Most Metrobus stops will remain the same, some will be added, and a small number will be removed to speed up service.

A useful tool for commuters to help transition to the new bus network can be found at wmata.com/betterbus. Just enter an existing bus route to see the new route option(s).

The new bus network will provide more frequent, consistent bus service, enhance access across the region, and make bus service easier to understand. Temporary signs and maps are helping to guide commuters and other riders for the June 29th start and will eventually be replaced with permanent signage.

Better Bus Partners are helping riders prepare for launch day by distributing fact sheets and other materials, including route maps and schedules. Metro looks to extend the reach of engagement for the Better Bus initiative with the help of employers to share information to their employees.

Guaranteed Ride Home Program Gets Overall “A” Rating https://www.commuterconnections.org/enewsletter/guaranteed-ride-home-program-gets-overall-a-rating/ Thu, 05 Jun 2025 21:14:38 +0000 https://www.commuterconnections.org/?p=1449 Commuter Connections released its Guaranteed Ride Home (GRH) Customer Satisfaction Survey report for FY 2024, receiving high marks. An important workplace benefit, GRH serves as a free “insurance” program for commuters and one that cost zero dollars for employers to offer. The report reveals the success of the program to fulfill its promise of providing commuters with peace of mind when using ways to commute to work other than driving alone. As a support mechanism, GRH provides commuters who get to work (twice or more a week) by carpool, vanpool, train, bus, bike, or by walking with a free and reliable ride home when life’s unexpected emergencies arise.

A major hurdle for employees considering use of more sustainable commute methods is concern about the possibility of being stranded at work when illness or emergencies arise. GRH takes those worries away as the free service may be used to get home due to personal illness, a sick child, and for family emergencies. GRH can also be used for unscheduled overtime, when an employer mandates that an employee must stay late. Commuters may use the free GRH benefit for up to six free trips each year.

Of the 633 surveys sent to GRH participants, eight percent were completed, with the vast majority (94 percent) of respondents pleased with the overall service, giving either excellent or good ratings. Since 1997, the GRH program has been providing free rides to commuters when they need it most. GRH is available for those who work in the Washington DC and Baltimore regions (including Southern Maryland).

In addition to measuring program satisfaction, the survey also provides a forum for open-ended comments. In fact, 65 percent of respondents shared personal stories about how GRH helped them during their emergency or simply expressed gratitude. Some respondents explicitly credited GRH as the reason they started to use an alternative commute method, demonstrating that GRH serves as a security blanket and catalyst for more sustainable ways of commuting.

Bike to Work Day 2025 Brings Spokes and Smiles https://www.commuterconnections.org/enewsletter/bike-to-work-day-2025-brings-spokes-and-smiles/ Thu, 05 Jun 2025 20:40:58 +0000 https://www.commuterconnections.org/?p=1442 A spring tradition in the DMV for nearly 25 years, this May’s Bike to Work Day event ushered in pleasant weather and more than 12,700 commuters biking to work. On May 15th, bicyclists were greeted at 108 local “pit stop” events situated along their commute routes where they enjoyed free T-shirts, refreshments, and swag at all corners of the Washington, DC region. Most of the events were held during the morning commute and there were a few for the commute home.

During this year’s Bike to Work Day event, 28 percent of participants commuted by bicycle for the first time ever. Many of these newcomers were so inspired by the experience that they began biking to work more regularly.

When employees bike to work, employers experience a wide range of direct and indirect benefits. The most obvious gain for employers is a healthier workforce. When practiced regularly, cycling boosts cardiovascular health, reduces stress, and lowers risk of chronic diseases. These positive fitness attributes translate to fewer sick days and costs associated with absenteeism. Physical activity such as bicycling can also improve mood and mental clarity, with employees arriving more alert and better focused for job performance.

The metropolitan region boosts some of the most informed and involved people in the country when it comes to environmentally sustainable practices. By supporting and encouraging employees to bike to work, employers demonstrate awareness of and engagement toward these shared core values.

Fostering a bike-friendly workplace develops active commuting, a positive company culture, and contributes to a healthier, more environmentally focused workplace.

Looking for ways to improve bike culture at your workplace? Installing bike racks for employees is a great way to make biking to work a more attractive option. For employees without a bicycle, low-cost annual memberships to Capital Bikeshare (CaBi) are a benefit to consider offering. Interested in offering Capital Bikeshare Corporate benefits at your workplace, but not sure if it’s the right fit? The Try CaBi program allows your company to offer a FREE CaBi membership at your office for 30 days.

These and other types of support for bicycling to work are also advantageous toward enticing potential employee talent. View or download the Commuter Connections Bicycling to Work in the Washington Region booklet for more tips on improving bike accommodations at your workplace. These booklets can be ordered for free from Commuter Connections.

Commuter Connections is a regional network of transportation organizations coordinated by the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board (TPB) at the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG). For more than 50 years, this network has offered free services to both employers and employees.

“From carpool ridematching to bring together people with similar commutes, to the Guaranteed Ride Home program—which provides commuters with a free ride home in the event of personal illness, emergencies, or unscheduled overtime—Commuter Connections is focused on helping workers in the region make smart choices to fit their lifestyle,” said Commuter Connections Director Daniel Sheehan.

Commuter Connections also works directly with employers to incentivize their employees to take carpools, vanpools, transit, bicycling, and walking to get to work, helping reduce metropolitan Washington’s congested roads and reducing auto pollution.

If you are an employer who wants to promote sustainable commuting to your employees, register your company for the goDMV Commuter Competition. It is a great way to motivate employees to get to work on time and foster healthy competition within the team. The competition starts on March 3 and continues through May 31, 2025. Some of the staple programs that Commuter Connections offers include:

‘Pool Rewards

‘Pool Rewards pays cash to commuters to carpool. Commuters register their new carpools with Commuter Connections, and when approved, carpoolers can earn up to $320 over 90 days, while vanpools of at least seven people can qualify for a $200 recurring monthly subsidy. Various employers also offer employees up to $325 each month to cover vanpool expenses.

Guaranteed Ride Home

In case of an emergency, Guaranteed Ride Home from Commuter Connections has your back. It provides commuters who regularly (two or more days per week) carpool, vanpool, bike, walk, or take transit to work with a free and reliable ride home. Commuters may take advantage of Guaranteed Ride Home for up to six times per year for personal illness, a sick child, or other emergencies that may arise. It can even be used for unscheduled overtime when your employer asks you to stay a bit later.

CommuterCash

By the end of this February, CommuterCash, the revamped mobile app previously known as incenTrip, will engage commuters by encouraging them to choose alternatives to driving alone through gamification and financial rewards and helping them find better travel options. Use the app to explore carpooling, transit, biking, or a combination of travel options. Track your commute trip into the CommuterCash app and earn points that can be redeemed for cash, Visa cards, Capital Bikeshare credits, or fare onto Metro’s SmarTrip cards. Commuters traveling into the Washington, DC area or anywhere within Maryland can earn up to $10 cash after completing just 10 trips – or save your points to earn $50. Up to $600 can be earned per calendar year. Earn cash while you commute with CommuterCash!

As more workers return to the office, CommuterCash can help you find the best way to avoid the stress of fighting traffic along with reducing wear and tear mileage on your vehicle and the cost of gas. Get Ready for goDMV Regional Employer Competition https://www.commuterconnections.org/enewsletter/get-ready-for-godmv-regional-employer-competition/ Sat, 11 Jan 2025 17:14:39 +0000 https://www.commuterconnections.org/?p=1209

The goDMV Commuter Competition is a friendly competition among District, Maryland, and Virginia employers to promote sustainable commuting amongst employees. The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments’ Commuter Connections program, along with the help of DDOT’s goDCgo program, MDOT, VDOT, and local jurisdictions are hosting this first-ever regional competition.

During the competition, commuters track their sustainable commute and non-commute trips to win prizes and other incentives as they climb the leaderboard. Best of all, it is free to participate, and even those unaffiliated with a participating employer can join and win prizes!

The competition starts on March 3 and continues through to May 31, 2025. Employers should indicate interest by February 1, 2025, to allow time for employer onboarding, program promotion, and employee registration. Register at goDMV.org to get started.

Why do this? goDMV organizers are looking to reduce the number of Single Occupant Vehicles (SOV) traveling on the roads and highways of the Washington metropolitan region. A competition such as this can make travel fun and rewarding and provides an opportunity for employers to pride themselves in doing something good for the community where they are located.

goDMV organizers will help employers get set up on the trip-logging platform and assist with encouraging employee participation. The employer with the highest employee participation will receive a glass trophy, a catered winner’s lunch, and bragging rights!

If an employer is not ready to participate in such a competition, there are opportunities to promote the competition to its customers, stakeholders, and employees to sign up and participate independently. In addition, goDMV organizers can provide graphics, text for newsletters and social media, and flyers to help spread the word.

Please do not forget to register yourself in the CommuterCash app, which is facilitating the competition. For more information, go to goDMV.org
